My Philosophy of Coaching

Bones in Your Wings

At The Briefing for Creation Day

“And now,” said God,
(assuming there were Forms
and some still do)
“are there any questions?”
Said a bird to God:
“Bones in my wings?
Man, are you mad?
I got to fly.
Gimme the stuff like
feathers and things
like I mean crazy with
fluff for the high.”
Said God to that bird:
“Bones in your wings.
And in a particular order.”

People come to a coach because, somewhere in their life, they want to fly. They have the wings: the desire, the capability. What they lack is structure to make it happen. They are continually buffeted by circumstance, or they just float.

The coaching process can provide this structure. Goals structure movement by directing it; accountability structures action by creating habit; concrete tools such as calendars and planners can structure time.

Even the support of the coach is a structure, a constant to count on as the client swings out into unfamiliar territory to try doing things a different way.

They may look the same, but floating is not flying. Flying is an intentional act. Bones in your wings will allow you to soar. And soaring is a choice.
